A Stylist’s Bali Wedding: Palm Springs and a bit of Black Tie in the Jungle

We had the pleasure of providing the furniture for Jane’s 30th birthday in Umalas in 2014 (which was impeccably styled by her talented self) so we were super excited about the magic she’d create for her own wedding to Michael last year. And, there was definitely magic! Think Oscar De La Renta’s 2015 Spring Ready-to-Wear Collection, tarot readers and crab racing plus lots of beautiful décor and a Chartreuse wedding gown! Enjoy.

Bride: Jane Peebles (Evans)
Groom: Michael Peebles
Where do you live? Perth, WA
Wedding Date: September 28 2015

Tell us, how did you meet? Was it Love at first sight?
Well, we are both from Perth and met in Bali in 2008. Mike was on a ‘boys trip’ for a friend’s bday party and I was on a ‘girls trip’ for a friends wedding and our paths crossed at Ku De Ta one fateful Sunday arvo. We spent the next few days together and continued the holiday fling back home! There were definite sparks the minute we met.

What about the engagement story? Can you give us a snapshot?
On one of our annual Bali visits, we were over on Nusa Lembongan celebrating my 30th bday and Mike popped the question! I told him I would leave him if he hadn’t done it by my 30th bday – he got in just in time!!

So you decided to become Mr & Mrs… Why Bali?
We met there, fell in love there and got engaged there – so it just seemed the perfect location to tie the knot. Plus we love the island and wanted all our family and friends to experience what we do each time we go.

How did you choose your Bali wedding planner?  What was her/his Super Power?
Sinly Anfeny from Bali Wedding Paradise had come highly recommended from two of our friends who had married in Bali before us – we had attended and loved them both! I was such a particular bride and Sinly was perfect at providing on-the-ground support. Nothing was too hard. Well, the hunt to find crazy crabs for our crab racing table almost drove her to insanity I’m sure, but as always, she pulled through with the goods!

Did you have a theme for the wedding? And was it a late night Pinterest obsession?!
It wasn’t your textbook Bali wedding, I wanted to create an event to remember – the theme was a bit Palm Springs, a bit Hollywood, a bit ‘black tie in the jungle’.  And yes, I spent maaaaaaaany a late night hour on Pinterest and Instagram!

How involved were you in the creative process?
Very. I have a styling background so the look of the event was the most important part for me and I took full creative control.

Did you sit down for a formal dinner or party the night away with canapés and cocktails?
We partied! Canapes, cocktails, a karaoke lounge, a tarot reader, crab racing, a caricature artist – it was great!

Tell us about your music. Did you have a special song to walk down the aisle to?
Mike and I love old soul music so I walked down the aisle to ‘At Last’ by Etta James. I just love her voice. Our first dance was to Ben E King’s ‘Stand by me’ and we flew the DJ in from Perth who kept everyone dancing with all our favourite soul, hip hop and dance tracks.

What was the most challenging aspect about planning a destination wedding?
Having to accept that not everything is available on the little island of Bali!

Did you get to spend much time with your guests who travelled for your wedding? Did you host a day after party or a night before welcome dinner?
We did! We had several events planned for our guests – a ladies day by the pool at the bridal villa, a boys night at Hanks Pizza & Liquor, a ‘meet and greet’ at Laca Laca Mexican Cantina and a ‘recovery session’ at Ku De Ta the day after the event.

Talk to us about your hair and make up. Who was your muse?
I opted for a sleek straight pony tail with bronze/gold eyes and nude lips. Blake Lively’s all-American look was probably my biggest influence.

Tell us about your D R E S S ?
Ahhh the dress. I wore a chartreuse coloured off-the-rack Toni Maticevski dress that I had altered to be strapless. I love Maticevski’s silhouettes, his dresses are true gowns. I was apprehensive at first to wear such an unusual colour but my best friend decided after seeing it, that I couldn’t wear anything else! I found inspiration to tie the look all together in Oscar De La Renta’s 2015 Spring Ready-to-Wear Collection which featured lot of beautiful pastel pinks and lime greens.

What was THE most memorable part of your big day?
I honestly can’t think of just one – Mike and I doing shots together at one point as we were both tired but were ready to kick on, the look on my Dad’s face when he saw me get out of the car, the guests reaction to my dress when I stood at the top of the stairs, and walking down the aisle hand in hand with my husband after being married….

If there was one piece of advice you could give a Bali bride planning their big day, what would it be?
Don’t sweat the small stuff by over thinking every single detail. Trust your instincts. Relax. Enjoy the process. Take it all in. Do what makes you and your husband happy.

Any other big news since your wedding?
Sure is. A bambino will be joining us in just over 7 weeks!
